The present work can be compared with the portrait, previously thought to be by Anton Raphael Mengs but now attributed to Thomas Jenkins, of John Brudenell-Montagu, later Marquess of Monthermer (1735-70), in the collection of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu (see F. Russell in the exhibition catalogue Treasure Houses of Great Britain, Washington, 1985-6, no. 174.) The few minor differences between the present portrait and the Beaulieu picture, and the canvas dimensions which suggest the work was executed in Italy, would support an attribution to Jenkins.
