AUGUSTINUS DE ANCONA (ca. 1270-1328). Summa de potestate ecclesiastica. Edited by Paulus de Bergamo (1414-1484). Rome: in the house of Franciscus de Cinquinis, 20 December 1479.
Median 4o (228 x 161 mm). Collation: [1-398 406 (1/1 blank, 1/2r text, 40/6v colophon); 4110 (41/1r table, 41/10r register, 41/10v blank)]. 328 leaves. 50 lines, double column. Type: 1:65G. 3- to 9-line spaces for initials. Unrubricated. (Small marginal tear to 9/2, one to two small wormholes through first 6 quires, slight discoloration to sheets 21/1.8 and 21/2.7, occasional minor marginal dampstaining.)
Binding: contemporary South German or Austrian blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, covers panelled with triple blind fillets, large central panel tooled with intersecting fillets forming an over-all saltire pattern, each compartment decorated with acorn-like tool and two repeated leafy tools disposed in lozenge or half-lozenge shape, the tools not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung, manuscript title on fore-edge, traces of two fore-edge clasps, brass edge-pieces at corners and lower boards next to spine, pastedowns from a single leaf from a 14th-century legal or theological manuscript, plain vellum sewing guards (rebacked, lacking upper inner metal edge-pieces, 19th-century ink shelfmark "No. 42" on front cover, small scrapes to back cover, first quire loose in stitching).
Provenance: Arnold Dyest (inscription on front free endpaper, stating that the book was purchased for him in Antwerp on 25 Jan. 1529: pro f arnoldo dyest Coadiutore... Emptus antwerpie 25 januarii anno 1529 pro 26 st) -- fr. Antonius Brant (16th-century inscription [second line effaced] -- George Dunn (1865-1912) of Woolley Hall, near Maidenhead (booklabel, sale, Sotheby's, Part III, 22 November 1917, lot 1855) -- (Bernard Quaritch, Ltd., 1917 collation note) -- unidentified modern book label, fist with arrows and motto "esto memore conjugere".
Third edition, one of 10 recorded editions from the press "in domo Francisci de Cinquinis apud sanctam Mariam de populo", active from 1477 to 1481. The philosophical and theological writings of Augustinus of Ancona were wide-ranging. His commentaries on the Scripture were particularly influential, as were his many tracts concerning church politics. In the Summa de potestate ecclesiastica he defended papal intervention in worldly affairs.
