BACLER D'ALBE, Louis Albert Ghislain (1761-1824). Carte Generale du Théâtre de la Guerre en Italie & dans les Alpes. Paris: chez l'auteur, 1797-1802.
Engraved maps of the theatre of the Napoleonic war in Italy and Switzerland, in two series; Northern Italy and the Alps, 30 sheets and index map, and the Kingdom of Naples, Sicily and Sardinia, 24 sheets on 18 leaves and index map, average sheet size 540 x 680mm, all dissected, mounted on linen, and folding, several of the Northern sheets partially hand-coloured, the sheets for the Piedmont region annotated with the positions of the French forces during their campaign in Northern Italy. (Occasional light staining.) Contained in 5 slipcases (worn, some bases and covers lacking).
A fine set of Bacler D'Albe's impressive map of Italy, each sheet with a decorative key label as sold by Charles Picquet of Paris. This survey must certainly be one of the largest maps of Italy covering an area of approximately 160 square feet! The map was produced as a commercial venture, but certainly copies were in military use, during the period of French control in Italy. Although it is remarkably detailed, French military surveyors in 1805 remarked on it's inaccuracy. (4)
