4° (188 x 135mm). Numerous woodcut initials, 3 woodcut head-pieces. (Without front blank.) Old calf, gilt Signet Library stamp on covers (neatly rebacked, old lettering-piece laid down). Provenance: extensive early annotations and marginal notes in a single unidentified hand; Edinburgh, The Society of the Writers to the Signet (binding); George Goyder (armorial bookplate and inscription).

Twelfth edition, second (and final) issue corrected by the author. The first complete edition of the Essayes and the last to be published during the author's lifetime. Bacon writes in the dedication "I doe now publish my Essayes.. I have enlarged them, both in number, and Weight; So that they are indeed a New Worke". Hannah Barret and Richard Whitaker published the first issue and Hannah Barret alone published the second. In addition to the re-printed title only two textual amendments can be assigned with certainty to the final issue; this copy contains both and thus represents the authoritative text.
