BARTH, Heinrich (1821-1865). Travels and Discoveries in the North and Central Afica: being a journal of an expedition undertaken under the auspices of H.B.M.'s Government in the yerars 1849-1855. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, & Roberts, 1857-1858.
5 volumes, 8° (222 x 143mm). Half-titles, publisher's advertisements at the back of vols.I and IV. 15 folding engraved maps (13 with route marked in red, 2 hand-coloured in outline), 1 folding wood-engraved plan, 60 tinted lithographic plates by M. & N. Hanhart from drawings by J.M. Bernatz from sketches by Barth. (Some spotting, affecting five maps and one plate, final map in vol.V with 60mm. tear, half-title and frontispiece in vol.I, text leaves R4 and R5 and one plate in vol.III and one plate in vol.V detached.) Original green cloth, covers blocked in blind, spines lettered in gilt (spines bumped at head and foot, some inner hinges split). Provenance: Osborne Smith (author's presentation inscription in vol.I 'To his kind and noblehearted friend Osborne Smith as a proof of his sincere attachment by the author'); Nathaniel Cushing Nash (bookplate).

Bernatz after sketches by Barth. (Occasional light marginal soiling.) Original cloth-backed yellow paper-covered boards, titled in black on upper cover 'Barth's African Sketches.' (rebacked, modern endpapers). A RARE separately-published selection for popular consumption?, taken from the 60 plates published with the 5-volume work - a comparison of the two issues of the plates show a marked colour variation.
