The sitter can perhaps be identified on comparison with a self-portrait by Tibaldi at the Uffizi (L. Berti et al., Gli Uffizi, catalogo generale, Florence, 1979, p. 1018, no. A936). It probably comes from a series of portraits such as the drawing at the Victoria and Albert Museum, another sold at Christie's, 29 June 1971, lot 41 or the album of twelve Bolognese worthies, also sold at Christie's, 6 June 1972, lot 42 (C. Höper, Bartolomeo Passarotti, Worms, 1987, nos. Z209, Z150 and Z152-63).
