WINES FROM A WEST COAST CONNOISSEUR FEATURING 1972 ROMANÉE-CONTI
When I arrived at this collector's house, the view was the first thing that caught my eye. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean a few hours north of San Francisco, this consignor had a custom cellar, lined in copper for insulation and built into the side of a cliff. The house, battered constantly by easterly winds is cool (in the mid 40s, with wind chill, on the August day we were there), and the wines haven't been moved in years. We tasted several samples from the cellar: The 1970 Mouton was the best example of this wine I've had. It was showing it's age, but still with good fruit, and chocolate and cedar undertones. We also tasted the 1966 Figeac. See Charles Curtis's note for his thoughts on that wine.
