Details
BERLIOZ, Hector (1803-1869)
Autograph letter signed ('H. Berlioz') to [François Hippolyte] Réty, Dresden, 1 May [1854].
In French. One page, 227 x 138mm, integral address panel to Réty at the Paris Conservatoire (seal tear with loss of upper right corner).

'Huge success here and in Hanover': Berlioz fêted in Germany. 'This evening I am giving my 4th and last concert in Dresden. The day after tomorrow, Wednesday, I shall set off for Weimar where I shall stay one day. On Friday I shall take the railway again for Paris and I shall arrive on Saturday night or Sunday morning at the latest': he therefore asks Réty not to send some documents to the ministry before the 9th. He concludes 'Huge success here and in Hanover; encores, recalls, crowns, deputations from the orchestra etc etc, I shall recount it at greater length on my return'.

This was Berlioz's second visit to Dresden, after his first in 1843: the city was at the time one of the main centres for music in the German states, under the aegis of Hans von Bülow. Although in low spirits before his departure after the death of his (separated) wife, Harriet Smithson, on 4 March, Berlioz was considerably cheered by the success of his tour and the superlative quality of the Dresden orchestra – he described his third concert, on 29 April, which included a complete performance of Romeo and Juliet, as 'one of the most beautiful evenings I have experienced in my career as an artist'. Not found in the Correspondance générale.
