4° (216 x 150mm). Black and roman letter, ruled in red. Woodcut title border [McKerrow and Ferguson 165]. (Some leaves adhering slightly at inner margin.) LONDON BINDING OF CONTEMPORARY OLIVE GOATSKIN TOOLED IN GILT WITH THE ROYAL ARMS OF CHARLES I, the arms within a double diamond-shaped panel entirely filled with scrolls, palm leaves and volutes, enclosed by an outer rectangular panel with palm leaves repeated at angles and Prince of Wales' feathers in an oval frame at each corner, border of double rolls and multiple fillets, smooth gilt spine with longitudinal panel, gilt board edges and turn-ins, comb-marbled pastedowns, gilt edges (joints rubbed and slightly cracked), in morocco-backed cloth box. Provenance: 'Presented to Thomas James Davies by W John Woody Hill 1828' (inscription on front blank); Maggs Catalogue no. 845, 1957, no. 57, price £250.

FINE EXAMPLE OF A CHARLES I BINDING with an all-over gilt design which departs from the centre- and corner-piece style still much in use at this period. The binding was presumably for Chapel use, and is very similar in conception to binding no. 93 in M.M. Foot The Henry David Gift, vol. II, which is on a 1639 Book of Common Prayer. DMH 453; STC 2938.
