This work is sold with a certificate of authentication from the artist's estate.
'The Storm' appears to have been painted circa 1919-20 and dated at a later stage by the artist. According to his grandson, this was a frequent occurrence and Anisfel'd dated many of his earlier works with dates in the 1940s, hence the discrepancy with the present lot. There does not appear to be other versions of this composition.
The artist's grandson also confirmed that 'this curious image, which combines a sleeping girl, strange dolls, and a turbulent storm seen through a window, was painted in Anisfel'd's New York studio and depicts his mother.' (see Boris Anisfeld - Paintings and Stage Designs, 1906-1926, New York, 2003, p. 13). For biographical information on the artist see lot 199.
