Bouchard Père et Fils, La Romanée 2005
Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits
In original wooden cases
2005***** Outstanding for Red and White.
Well balanced wines, whites that have their acidity all packed in by the luscious ripe fruit.
A legendary vintage which is in the all-time top five, next to the 1990 and 1959’s.
The 2004/05 winter was very cold delaying the start of the vegetation. Some red vineyards were still recovering from 2004’s hail damage hence were giving limited production this year.
Spring was uneven cold and warm spells, prolonging the flowering and causing uneven fruit set.
After a short hot period in June fine dry weather continued until harvest, not exceptionally hot. Some drought problems were the only worries of the vignerons. July to September weather was quite stable, dry sunny and warm. The Ban des Vendanges was announced for 12 September, with a fine forecast of clear skies there was no rush to start harvest so everyone started their vendange at their own choice. A unique luxury which is not common in Burgundy.
All wines have showed a great balance and structure behind dark deep fruit. A vintage which is rightfully in high demand.
Tasting note: Dark garnet color with purple reflections. Nose quite reserved at first, fine grained oak tone. Lively mouth, in the continuity of the nose. BPF.
