BROUSSAIS, François-Joseph (1772-1838). Autograph letter signed to [the son of Joseph Jacotot], Paris, 3 April 1829, 3 pages, 4to (light stains in central vertical fold).
A reply to a letter about his correspondent's father's success, expressing considerable reservations about his correspondent's views on the equality of intelligence. 'Nul doute aussi que la même opération de perception ne soit plus facile chez l'un que chez l'autre, et que Pierre ne puisse recevoir en une heure plus de perceptions d'existence de corps et de modification de corps que Paul n'en recevrait dans un jour'. Continuing to demolish his correspondent's case, Broussais prefers to judge for himself the father's work.
A veteran of the Napoleonic wars, Broussais obtained a professorship in Paris where his lectures were acclaimed. His correspondent's father, the educationalist Joseph Jacotot (1770-1840), left Paris at the Restoration to teach at Louvain, and carried out important studies on language learning. He had just published De l'irritation et la folie.
