BUCK, Pearl S. (1892-1973). Autograph draft manuscript of the short story "Enough for a Lifetime," evidently a first draft, with extensive revisions and corrections in the text, originally published in The Woman's Home Companion in January 1935. 49pp., 8vo, neatly written on lined sheets from a loose-leaf notebook, neatly sewn together at left margin with string, titled at top of first page. A story set in China and drawing heavily on Buck's own long residence there as a child and later as the wife of a missionary. It was published after she won the Pulitzer Prize for The Good Earth and three years before she won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The story's main character, Amy Willey, is dedicated to a "spiritual calling," but finds little reward or happiness in her daily life. -- BUCK. Typecript signed ("Pearl S. Buck, of the story "Hearts Come Home," the title story in the collection Hearts Come Home and Other Stories (1962). 12pp., 4to, typed on rectos only. Fine. Another story set in China, dealing with the conflict between modernity and tradition in one Chinese family. Together two items.
