A fine copy of the first and only edition of Burgues de Missiessy’s guide to ship stowage. The author joined the navy at age 10 and served under d’Estaing during the American War of Independence at Newport, Saint Lucia, Grenada, and Savannah. In the year of publication, he was frigate commander in the Mediterranean and in 1793 he attained a promotion to the role of contre-amiral. Polak 1320.
Quarto (250 x 190mm). 6 folding engraved plates. Contemporary cat’s paw calf, French royal arms gilt to covers, red morocco spine label gilt-lettered, spine gilt. Provenance: evidence of removed bookplate on front pastedown.
