FIRST EDITION, CHRONOLOGICALLY THE EARLIEST PRINTED ARTICLES BY THE AUTHOR AND OF EXCEPTIONAL RARITY. Although not issued officially until 1855, Burton's two articles contained on p. 613-657 of this Bombay Government Selection were written and submitted for publication on the 2nd March 1847 and the 29th December 1848. Together with his notorious report on Karachi brothels for General Napier, they were sent to Bombay and '...precipitated a crisis which eventually drove Burton from India.' In 'Arabian Nights,' Vol. X, p. 206 Burton writes that his earlier report to Napier was mistakenly sent to Bombay with these two modest papers with the result that he was relieved of his duties. Penzer wrote that in 1921 copies of the two reports could still be had from the India Office and one was in the Royal Geographical Society Library. In 1990 Casada stated that the R.G.S. copy could not be located. Other reports concern the Indus, p. 1-635 with an article by Lieut. John Wood on the Indus River, p. 541-612 with 6 maps; Sind, p. 637-774; and Routes from Karachi by Lieut. Col. J. Holland. on p. 1-78 of the appendix. Penzer p. 198-199. Casada 97, 151.
