CALDERON DE LA BARCA, Pedro (1600-1681)
Autos sacramentales, alegoricos, y historiales. Madrid: Manuel Ruiz de Murga, 1717.
First complete edition of a collection of allegorical religious plays by the writer who ‘succeeded Lope de Vega as the leading Spanish playwright of the Golden Age’. Calderón wrote some eighty 'autos sacramentales' in total, based on a fixed set of theological and philosophical constructs, but of ever varying dramatic form. Palau III, 39833.

6 volumes, quarto (197 x 140mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait, titles in red and black within ornamental border, woodcut head- and tailpieces (a few tears or chips into text, one repair just into text with a few letters in facsimile, some staining, pencil marks to two leaves in vol. VI, a couple of catchwords just trimmed). 18th-century mottled calf gilt, brown and green leather spine labels lettered in gilt, edges red (light wear at extremities, a few stains). Provenance: some early annotations (occasionally trimmed) – Carlos Cruz Montt (Chilean architect, 1879-1955; bookplate) – Gustavo Casali B. (bookplate).
