Lot Essay

Inscription: Qur'an IV, sura al-nisa', v.103


It is possible that this is an early work by Arif Efendi. Born in Filibe (Plovdiv) in Bulgaria in 1830, he recieved in his ijaza from Hafiz Isma'il Efendi. On moving to Istanbul in 1876 he opened a grocery in Saraçhanebasi, for which he earned himself the soubriquet 'Bakkal'.
