Barbu, les cheveux courts bouclés, barbu, une cape maintenue par une fibule sur un corselet, le regard frontal, la tête légèrement tournée vers la droite; dans une monture ovale en or perlée appliquée sur un fond carré en agate grise, enchâssé dans un chevalet carré en bronze doré avec une bordure ajourée décorée de masques, volutes et putti ailés, avec anneau de suspension surmonté d'un masque de putto ailé

A CARVED OVAL AGATE CAMEO BUST OF CARACALLA
18TH CENTURY
With short curly hair, bearded, brooched cloak over corselet, facing front, the head turned slightly to the right; in an oval beaded gold mount applied to a square grey agate ground within an associated square gilt-bronze easel frame with openwork border of masks, scrolls and winged putti, suspension loop surmounted by winged putto mask

The present portrait is derived from a marble bust from the Farnese collection, now in the Museo Nazionale, Naples, regarded as one of the last great works of art from antiquity (F. Haskell and N. Penny, Taste and the Antique - The Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900, New Haven and London, 1981, pp. 172-3, fig. 89). The Frowning Caracalla also exists in other cameo versions, for instance in Munich (I. Weber, Geschnittene Steine des 18. bis 20. Jahrhunderts, Munich, 1995, p. 63, no. 45).

Ce portrait s'inspire d'un buste en marbre de la Collection Farnese, conservé aujourd'hui au Musée National de Naples, et considéré comme l'une des dernières grandes oeuvres d'art de l'Antiquité (F. Haskell et N. Penny, Taste and the Antique Antique - The Lure of Classical Sculpture 1500-1900, New Haven et Londres, 1981, pp. 172-173, fig. 89). Le Frowning Caracalla est également representé dans d'autres versions en camée, parmi lesquelles un modèle à Munich (I. Weber, Geschnittene Steine des 18. bis 20. Jahrhunderts, Munich, 1995, p. 63, no. 45.
