Adriaan Roland Holst (1888-1976) is considered one of the most distinguished poets of this century in The Netherlands. He won several mayor literature prizes (Constantijn Huygensprijs in 1948, P.C. Hooftprijs in 1955, De Grote prijs der Nederlandse Letteren in 1959) He was a close friend of Carel Willink. This lot is a study for the painting of Roland Holst now in the Collection of the Letterkundig Museum, The Hague (compare: H.C.L. Jaffeé, Willink, Amsterdam 1979, p. 226, ill. no. 218)
