Lot Essay

Aleksei Grigor'evich Orlov (1737-1807) was a Guards Officer who took an active part in the 1762 coup that brought Catherine II to the throne of Russia, for which he was created Count and promoted to Lieutenant-General. In 1765 he put down a revolt amount Don cossacks, and in 1768-74 was nominally commander of the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean. He retired from active service in 1775. In 1778 he found the Khrenovskii stud which became renowned for its breeds of horses.
