CAROLUS LINNAEUS (1707-1778)

Materia medica, liber I. de plantis. Stockholm: Laurentius Salvius, 1749. Small 8° (195 x 118mm). Engraved frontispiece and folding engraved plate, both by C. Bergquist after I.G. Hallman. (Frontispiece cropped with part loss of imprint, lightly browned throughout, occasional spotting, stronger at beginning and end.) Contemporary half calf (front joints cracked but cords holding, very rubbed and bumped). Provenance: Carl Peter Curman (1833-1913), Swedish physician and balneologist (library stamp on endpaper and title) – his son: John Sigurd Curman (1879-1966), Swedish architect and art historic (bookplate) – manuscript note in Swedish, stating it has been bought at the National Library Auction in Uppsala in 1794 – page with manuscript notes on the book loosely inserted.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of Linnaeus’ most important medical work, containing the Linnaean names of 535 medicinal plants, several of which, for the first time, are reduced to their proper genera and species.
