FIRST EDITION, A FINE COPY of 'one of the earliest and best accounts of pioneer days in this region' (Vail). Carver was sent from the remote British outpost at Mackinac, Michigan, to explore areas to the west and north and describe a region which, it was then thought, must be near the elusive Northwest Passage. Travelling far into unexplored territory, Carver lived with Indians of a dozen nations, and his account is particularly valuable for Indian lore of the Minnesota-Wisconsin area. Carver, wounded and captured at the battle of Fort William Henry, gives one of the most spirited eye-witness accounts of the famous massacre. Howes C-215; Jones 563; Lande 108; Sabin 11184; Streeter III:1772; Vail 654; Wheat Mapping the Transmississippi West 175.
