Lot Essay

By repute this bronze was a gift from Tsar Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia to Jonkheer Just de la Paisières, the grandfather of the present owner.

Russian sculptor Vassili Yacovlevich Grachev (1831-1905) is popularly known for his portrayal of Cossack subjects, who were famed for their self-reliance and military skills.
