2 parts in one, 4o (232 x 185 mm). Part I: engraved title, 52 emblematic plates by J. Sewelinck after A. van de Venne the emblematic illustrations FINELY COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND (emblem 34 not colored); Part II: engraved portrait frontispiece of Galathee (without portrait of Phyllis) and 4 engraved illustrations (some browning, some light dampstaining). Contemporary Dutch vellum (some minor staining).
Provenance: acquired in 1994.

FIRST EDITION. The text was first published in Sivenus Alcibiadis (1618), with the exception of the Dutch verse. A beautifully colored emblem book by Jacob Cats, one of the most important author's of emblem books "whose volumes still form one of the adornments of Dutch houses Cats took inspiration from proverbs and everyday life, his realistic emblems form a counterpart to genre painting and supply interesting evidence for the history of costume" (Praz p. 86).
