[CAVENDISH, George (1500-ca 1561)]. The Negotiations of Thomas Woolsey, the Great Cardinal of England. London: Printed for William Sheares, 1641.

Small 4o (179 x 131 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece. (Small repair on lower inner margin of title, some very slight browning.) 19th-century calf, gilt-stamped ornament on sides, edges gilt. Provenance: purchased from Scribner Rare Books, New York, 18 August 1972.

FIRST EDITION of one of the earliest printed versions of Cavendish's biography of Woolsey. Although likely written in 1557, the more complete text of Cavendish's manuscript of the Life remained unpublished until 1815. Extracts from it had been previously included in Stow's 'Annales,' but this was the first separate edition (although it was a hastily prepared text published for party purposes). "The view of Wolsey taken by Cavendish is substantially the same as that of Shakespeare, and it is by no means improbable that Shakespeare had read Cavendish in manuscript" (DNB). Wing C1619.
