CEVOLI, Francesco. An Occasionall Discourse, upon an Accident which befell His Maiesty in Hunting. Composed in Italian, by Francis Cevolus, and thence translated into English, London: John Norton for Robert Bird, 1635.
2 parts, 4° (184 x 140mm). English and Italian text. Woodcut royal arms on titles. Brown hard-grained morocco by Kelly and Sons.
A VERY RARE account of an incident that happened to Charles I while hunting near Newmarket in 1633. A hare broke away from its hunters and took sanctuary under the king's horse. Unfortunately, Cevoli does not vouchsafe what happened next, dwelling rather on the mystical nature of kingship and the emblematic properties of the hare. Schwerdt I, p.101; STC 4922 (locating only the copies at BL, Bodley and Lincoln College, Oxford).
