CHALKHILL, John (ca 1595-1642). Thealma and Clearchus. A Pastoral History, in smooth and easie Verse. London: Printed for Benjamin Tooke, 1683.
8o (179 x 111 mm). (Lacking first blank A1.) Modern dark blue morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Riviere (rear cover detached). Provenance: Thomas Wallace (bookplate) -- James Cox Brady (bookplate) -- purchased from Scribner Rare Books, New York, 11 February 1969.
FIRST EDITION, with corrected state of title-page with Spencer's first name correctly spelled. The elusive Chalkhill was "an Acquaintant and Friend of Edmund Spencer" (title), whose only known other published work consists of two lyrics printed in Walton's Complete Angler (lot 117). Although Walton did not know Chalkhill personally, he edited this work and contributed the Preface. The work was left unfinished and the final half-line of text reads: "Thealma lives." Below this Walton adds the printed comment: "And here the Author dy'd, and I hope the Reader will be sorry." Hayward 130; Wing C1795.
