Lot Essay

The Swedish naval architect Frederik Henrik af Chapman (1721-1808) issued this work, which was the first substantial collection of ship-building draughts for practical use, without text. In some copies, the plates are unfolded or flattened, so that the book takes on an oblong folio form, as with the Maggs copy priced at £65 in 1933, also the Witt copy sold by BBA last year for £4,830. In this copy, the key to the plates, originally issued in Swedish, has been replaced by a translation into English and French, though to have been specially printed at the time the book was rebound, although dated 1769. The plates themselves are double-page.
