The figure of the seated sultan may be related to two compositions, now lost, one painted in 1752 for King Louis XV Le Grand Seigneur assis sous une tente prenant du café au milieu de ses favorites, a drawing for which is known in a French private collection; and another, mentioned in the sale catalogue of the Comte d'Orsay collection, Jeune Français introduit dans le sérail où se voit le Sultan assis sur un trône, ayant à ses pieds, assise sur un coussin, la sultane favorite, T. Lanfrançois, Charles Coypel, Paris, 1994, nos. P294. D 94 and P384, not illustrated. On two occasions, Charles Coypel had had the privilege of seeing the Turkish Ambassador in person, once, at his father's studio when Yirmisekiz eleb Mehmed Efendi and his son Said Efendi visited Paris in 1720, and a second time, when Said Efendi returned to Paris on his second embassy in 1742. The fashion for Oriental compositions was thus regularly renewed with the frequent arrival of Orientals with exotic costumes in Paris.
