Lot Essay

Born in London, Clifford was active in Spain from 1852 until 1862, the year before his death. He became the official photographer to the Spanish Queen in 1858 and remained so for nearly five years, travelling the country and recording momentous occasions in her life. He used both paper and collodion negatives and is best known for his large-format views and architectural studies.
