Property from the Studio of Charles Halkerston (D.1899) and Charles Halkerston Woolford (1864-1934)
The following lots are consigned by the family of the Edinburgh born artist Charles Halkerston and his nephew Charles Halkerston Woolford. Not much is known about Halkerston's life other than through his prolific exhibiting, mainly at the Royal Scottish Academy. He painted in watercolours, oils and also etched. His subjects were varied, from landscapes, figure subjects, interiors and genre scenes of which all are represented in the following selection. The works have come down through the family via his nephew, the artist Charles Halkerston Woolford (1864-1934) with whom he occasionally shared a studio and who also painted lots 112 and 115.

Halkerston had a studio at no.12 Buccleuch Place in 1870-71, thereby dating this work from that period and appears to be looking towards the West of the city over the Meadows.
