While Charles Harold Davis studied in France he married and he and his French bride moved to a village near Barbizon, France in 1882. During his stay in France he became one of the leading American painters to study the Barbizon Style.

Returning to New England in 1891 he took up residence in Mystic, Connecticut and painted tonalistic landscapes with rolling hills, moody sky and expressive horizons. He was a frequent participant in Paris Salon exhibitions and it is thought by scholars that his evolution in usage of palette and style were greatly influenced by the painters of the Impressionist movement that he encountered during these exhibitions and visits to France.

A Clearing is a superb example of Davis's celebrated trademark of balmy blue skies with cloud masses riding over hilltops.
