Lot Essay

Modeled in April 1926 and cast circa 1929-34, The Bug Hunters is a reworking of The Lunch Hour, a smaller work the artist exhibited at the International Art Exposition of Rome in 1911.

According to Ginger K. Renner, the present work is believed to be one of only eight lifetime casts made by the artist, one of which was purchased by George Sack, Russell's largest bronze collector.

A copy of a letter from Ginger K. Renner discussing the present work, dated March 25, 2004, accompanies the lot.
