CHATEAU CHEVAL-BLANC

The estate of Cheval-Blanc is situated at the extremity of Saint-Emilion bordering on Pomerol, with views of l'Evangile and La Conseillante, and offers a very curious mixture of soils and subsoils whose nature change at each step. A vineyard walk alongside the roadside clearly illustrates this; at Cheval-Blanc the soils are rich in clay and gravel, deep tan in colour and looks nourished and moist.

The result of Cheval-Blanc's soil divesity and an extremely well-chosen selection of grapes varieties, combined with the assiduous care taken over the winemaking and elevage, produces a wine of great softness, body and delicacy. The delicious bouquet and more particularly its distinctive style make it instantly recognisable and more importantly in demand.

Château Cheval-Blanc--Vintage 1947
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A). Belgian-bottled by Vandermeulen
Caspule cut to reveal embossed cork. Lightly bin-soiled and slightly damaged label. Level very top-shoulder
Tasting note: Belgian-bottles: two in 1977 labelled 'J van der Meulen-Decannière' both rich, very flavoury but with marked acidity. The other more recently, I think just labelled 'Vandermeulen', at de Cock's tasting in Paris: intensely deep; sound bouquet, lots of fruit on nose and palate; rich with an attenuated slightly acidic finish. Last tasted Dec 1995 ****. Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
