CHATEAU D'YQUEM

A history of the Château

The history of Yquem (like the wine) is something of mystery even today.

The four-hundredth anniversary was celebrated at Château Yquem in 1993; it was on December 8, 1593 that Jacques de Sauvage acquired from the "Crown" "the house known as Yquem...".

The history of Yquem takes in the strands of three Families that are intricately woven together to complete the story.

The "Lur" originates from Fruin de Lur who lived in Limousin in the 10th Century, while the "Saluces" branch comes from the Marquis of Saluzzo in the Piedmont.

In 1785, during the reign of Louis XVI, the estate of Yquem came into the Lur-Saluces family following the marriage of Françoise Joséphine de Sauvage, the "Lady of Yquem", with Louis Amédée de Lur Saluces, who was a godson of Louis XV.

Three years later Louis Amédée de Lur Saluces passed on and left the "Lady of Yquem" to manage the estate alone. Her drive and passion for the estate began the generations-old commitment to this estate by the Lur-Saluces family and set in stone the twin pillars of Yquem that still exist today - respect for the patrimony and the pursuit of quality.

Her grandson, Romain-Bertrand, and above of all the grandson of the latter, Bertrand, turned the family estate into a real family vocation.

Equally dominant, since the 18th century, is its wine, both in quality and price. So then from the 1780s until quite recently, the château was owned and run by the Lur Saluces family; the present Comte Alexandre de Lur Saluces continues to manage the estate with the new owners.

1929: Picking began early on September 18 and, as all the grapes had reached full concentration and botrytised at the same moment, only one pass of the vineyard was made. The finished wine has some 150mg of residual sugar per liter which is extraordinarily high (the great 1990 vintage has just 130mg/l). This has undeniably helped the longevity of this great wine.

Yquem, along with Tokaji Aszu Eszencia and the finest madeira, develops well in bottle and is famed for longevity. For long it has been the pride of connoisseurs and collectors and this sale is a unique opportunity to acquire one of the greatest pre-war vintages from this impeccable provenance.RB

1929 *****

One rarely has to worry about the age of Yquem; it is more than a survivor, it develops extra dimensions. The level was into neck, and its colour so beautiful that, unusually, it was decanted to show off its perfect bright, amber-golden sheen. Boquet: perfect, ambrosial creme brulee; sweet but not excessively so, rich of course with counterbalancing acidity. Glorious flavour and length. It lingered and lingered.... MB
