PROPERTY FROM THE GENSBURGER COLLECTION (LOTS XX TO XX)The first records of the Gensburger family in China appear in 1885. Adventurous members of this wealthy Jewish family from French Alsace decided to try their luck in the Eastern world. Frederic Gensburger, from the second generation, was a renowned ophthalmologist in Shanghai and taught at the Aurora university. Original and unconventional, he was also a famous magician under the name of 'Le grand Fredini'. His son, Jacques, was born in Shanghai in 1924 and left China at the age of 6 when part of his family decided to settle back to France in 1930.After the war, Jacques made the decision to go back to Asia and was hired by an uncle to work in his jewellery shop in Hong Kong. His young wife-to-be joined him and they had a first son. They left Hong Kong when the baby was not even one year old. Back in France, Jacques finally decided to take care of the family collection of Chinese art, jades, hardstones, porcelain and bronzes amassed by 4 generations before him and to become established as a dealer. He opened a famous antique shop in a smart Parisian area, 90 avenue Raymond Poincaré, which closed in 1983. The highlights of the collection were an important group of beautiful jades but unfortunately the gallery was victim of aburglery which made the headlines in 1979 when the jades were stolen, and were never recovered.
