Lot Essay

The sitter in the present miniature has previously been identified as Peregrine Hyde Osborne, 2nd Duke of Leeds (1659-1729). However, based on the apparent age of the sitter and date of execution, he is most likely Peregrine Hyde Osborne, 3rd Duke of Leeds (1691-1731), the son of the 2nd Duke and his wife Bridget Hyde. As well as the apparent age of the sitter, this new identification is supported by the iconography of the 3rd Duke, including the portrait of him wearing Coronation robes, probably on the occasion of George I's Coronation in 1714, attributed to Michael Dahl, previously on loan to Lancaster House and sold Christie's, London, 7 July 2010, lot 163.
