During the first few months of 1924, Wood worked from his studio in the rue des Saints Pères, financed by his friend, Antonio de Gandarillas. He spent his mornings drawing from the nude and, in the afternoons, concentrated on painting, particularly focusing on the recent trends of European painting. His general tendency towards Post-Impressionism and in particular the Fauvist techniques used by Matisse, Derain and Vlaminck can be clearly seen in the present work, through the use of bold colours applied in broad horizontal and vertical brushstrokes.

Eleanor, Countess Castle-Stewart, married Arthur, 7th Earl in 1920 and was the daughter of Solomon R. Guggenheim.
