CHURCHILL, Winston S. (1874-1965). Typed letter signed ('Winston S. Churchill') to John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley, 10 Downing Street, 29 February 1952, 2½ pages, 4to, the first leaf on mourning paper (paper-clip stain, punch holes).
Churchill's official acceptance of Anderson's resignation (from a proposed role as chairman of a royal commission on taxation of profits and incomes, which he had given up in the face of Labour criticism). The prime minister delivers a ringing resumé of a distinguished political career, from 'the days when you risked your life in Dublin during the Irish Rebellion' and the 'composure with which, as Governor of Bengal, you faced a murderous assault' to his service in Churchill's wartime government, ultimately as chancellor of the exchequer, felicitating him as a character of independence and integrity, always considered 'above the turmoil of Party politics'.
