Lot Essay

The statue depicted in the present drawing was formerly in the Grimani Collection and is now in the Museo Archaeologico, Venice. Although traditionally identified as the Emperor Vitellius, it is now thought to be an anonymous courtier of the time of Hadrian.
An attribution to a Bolognese artist has been suggested.
