Lot Essay

Based on the painting, Two Monks, formerly thought to be by Rubens and then given to Van Dyck by Michael Jaffé and Eric Larsen (see E. Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony van Dyck, Freren, 1988, vol. II, p. 47, no. 85). The attribution of that picture, which at one point belonged to Sir Thomas Gainsborough, was based on an aide-mémoire sheet of head studies by Van Dyck, probably made while Van Dyck was in Rubens' studio (see M. Jaffé, The Devonshire Collection of North European Drawings, Turin, 2002, vol. I, p. 50, no. 969, illustrated p. 51).
