A VERY RARE PHOTOGRAPH OF LANGDON CLEMENS who was born at Elmira, N.Y., on 7 November 1870, Mark Twain's first child and only son. He was born a premature baby and was not expected to live. Mostly very ill during his brief life, he succumbed to diphtheria on 2 June 1872, two and a half months after his sister Susy was born. Clemens later felt he was responsible for the boy's death, having let the fur blankets fall off Langdon during a carriage ride in cold weather. When his daughter Susy died at the age of 24 in 1896, it shattered Clemens. Laid in is a newspaper clipping of John T. Winterich's rare books column in The Saturday Review of Literature on this photograph -- described as "the only known photographic print of Mark Twain's only son." It was a part of a Bret Harte centenary exhibition at the bookshop of G.A. Baker & Co. in New York.
