Second edition of Coleridge's Poems on Various Subjects, including many poems published for the first time. Elizabeth Pigot, the early owner of this copy, lived at Southwell on Burgage Green; in 1804, when she was sixteen, Byron and his mother settled at Southwell, occupying Burgage Manor, and the two quickly became friends. Although Byron left Southwell for Cambridge in 1805, he continued to visit her until 1807, the date of her inscription, and a regular correpondence continued until 1811. About 1807 Elizabeth Pigot was engaged to be married 'but on the same day she happened to write two letters, one to her lover and the other to Lord Byron. By some mischance she enclosed them in the wrong covers, and the lover, receiving the letter intended for Lord Byron, broke off the engagement' (DNB). Ashley I, p. 199; Shepherd p. 16.
