White published his Views in India, chiefly among the Himalayan Mountains between 1836 and 1838, with J.M.W. Turner and Samuel Prout contributing watercolours based on White's drawings. High in the Himalayas, Gangoutri is believed to be the place where the Ganges first touches earth. It is a place of pilgrimage, hence the figure of the Holy man, depicted with rosary and pots to collect sacred water.
