Lot Essay
The sitters were the son and daughter of Hans Willem Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland, who accompanied William, Prince of Orange, to England in 1670 and who later fought at the Battle of the Boyne. In 1700 he married Jane Martha Temple, Countess of Portland, with whom he had four children. A portrait of their eldest daughter, Sophia Bentinck (born 1701), later Duchess of Kent, by Constantijn Netscher, also signed and dated 1715 and of the same dimensions as the present lot, was with H. Nijstad, Amsterdam (year unknown, photograph of the Iconografisch Bureau).
