2o full pages (364 x 240mm). (Even age-toning.) Neatly tipped to a larger sheet labeled "James Fenimore Cooper" in upper margin, on verso the identifying inscription "...from the original M. S. of "The Headsman," signed by his daughter "Susan Fenimore Cooper [1813-1894], March 11 1864."
AN EXTENSIVE COOPER FRAGMENT, comprising approximately 2400 words from the later portion of Chapter VIII and first part of Chapter IX. A working manuscript with extensive revisions, cross-outs and corrections. The Headsman is the third and last novel of the trilogy The Brave (1831), and The Heidenmauer (1832), set in medieval Europe and written during his residence as U. S. Consul in Lyons, France from 1826 and 1833. The principal scenes is Lake Leman, or Geneva, and the Hospice of St. Bernard, on the Great St. Bernard Pass.
