Lot Essay

Hofstede de Groot's attribution of the present picture to Nicolaes Maes has been widely accepted until recently, although as early as 1925 doubts were expressed by Bredius; the attribution to Bisschop, with whom Maes' work has frequently been confused, is due to Professor Werner Sumowski (loc. cit.)
