He received his education at the Quelliniusschool in Amsterdam and, once maried, moved to Rijswijk. During this period, his work consisted of rather unrealistic and almost dreamlike depictions of subjects such as farmhouses and vegetable gardens. It wasn't until 1910 that Kuypers discovered his mature style influenced by the Hague school, and it is this mature style which is represented in the present collection of paintings. Working in the region of Soest, his wide polderlandscapes, which leave much room for extensive skies, show a preoccupation with nature. Furthermore, uncomplicated compositions in combination with a relatively strong palette are characteristic of this period. Kuypers painted in this established manner until 1924.
