CRANE, Walter
Nine Nursery Rhymes
watercolor and ink on paper (some minor surface wear along folds), matted and framed
9½ x 6¾ in. (241 x 172 mm), sheet size
An early watercolor in Crane's best fantasy style, illustrating nine nursery rhymes set within decorative pictorial borders, circa 1865. From the archives of the printer Edmund Evans (sold Sotheby's London, 9 July 1976, lot 523), but not identified there. The style is indicative of Crane's earliest picture toybook commissions for Ward, Lock & Tyler, which were engraved by Evans. This drawing was apparently unpublished. It is possible that it was a trial drawing for a more elaborate Baby's Opera (1877) or Baby's Bouquet (1878) compiled by his sister Lucy. Provenance: Justin G. Schiller, Ltd. catalogue 46 (1992), item 75.
