Woodcut title border [McKerrow & Ferguson 71], portrait of Henry VIII enthroned on verso [originally used as part of the title border of Bibles printed between 1535-51, cf.McK.&F. 31], 27 small biblical woodcut illustrations after Holbein, and larger woodcut on Kk7. (Title remargined, with loss of some surrounding text on verso; blank lower margin of Kk6 and 7 restored; six-line errata on Kk8 cut-out and mounted.) Early 19th-century straight-grained blue morocco, edges gilt. Provenance: William Vines (faded 16th-century signature); various MS. annotations attributed to Francis Douce; Cardiff Castle bookplate.

FIRST EDITION, one of two issues of the first English Reformation Catechism, based on the Latin translation by Justus Jonas of the Lutheran Brenz-Osiander Kirchenordnung for Brandenburg, and dedicated to Edward VI. Published the year before Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer. STC 5993, but apparently this copy is a mixture of this and the other issue STC 5992.5 [up to )(4]. STC lists 8 copies of one and 7 copies of the other issue, of which a total of 6 copies is imperfect.
